DE-CIX, the world’s leading Internet Exchange (IX) operator, announced today its market entry into Mexico. The company-owned distributed Internet Exchange will be located in Mexico City and Santiago de Querétaro, and will provide a data center and carrier neutral, secure, and high-performance interconnection platform for ISPs, content delivery networks, network operators, cloud service providers, and enterprises of all sizes. As an initial step, the IX – the 45th market added to DE-CIX’s global presence – will be hosted in the data centers of KIO Data Centers, and is planned to be ready for service in early 2024. Further data centers from diverse operators will be enabled in due course, extending the company’s reach in the country. DE-CIX Mexico will be directly connected to the flourishing interconnection ecosystem of DE-CIX Dallas – the largest carrier and data center neutral IX serving the Southwest region and one of the top 15 IXs in the US – allowing low latency and high-performance access to North American clouds, content, and applications. The new IX will be integrated into the North American and global DE-CIX ecosystem. From Day One, the full portfolio of DE-CIX services will be available.
“The millions of users in Mexico deserve digital services of state-of-the-art quality. This requires the best infrastructure possible, interconnected in low latency and localizing content, cloud, and applications as close as possible to the end users, for both private and business purposes. We are delighted to have KIO Data Centers for our entry into this important market,” explains Ivo Ivanov, CEO of DE-CIX. “Mexico currently still lacks a strong Internet Exchange and harmonized interconnection ecosystem. DE-CIX is ready to serve the growing demand for interconnection with not only peering but also modern enterprise-grade interconnection services, such as cloud connectivity and direct access to cloud-based applications. This will unleash the potential of the digital economy by providing better performance and user experience of content and applications, and affordable and high-quality Internet access for enterprises and individuals.”
“We want to welcome DECIX to the Mexican market and we feel honored that the KIO platform was chosen as the best option to host the DECIX platform. Neutrality is one of our core business pillars and we welcome more added-value services to be provided to all members of our ecosystem. It’s great to see the Mexican market continuously attracting investment in the digital space,” said Santiago Suinaga, KIO Data Centers CEO.
As the initial step for DE-CIX’s market entry to Mexico, one data center, KIO QRO1, will be enabled in Santiago de Querétaro, and three sites – KIO MEX2, MEX4, and MEX5 – will be taken into operation in Mexico City. The platform will directly connect to the flourishing interconnection ecosystem of DE-CIX Dallas, allowing low-latency and high-performance access to North American content and applications. The growing local ecosystem of cloud service providers in Mexico – with AWS, Microsoft, Oracle, and Google, among others, already on location or planning their market entrance – will be further enriched through access to North American cloud zones, and by enabling enterprise networks to directly connect to clouds over the DE-CIX Cloud Exchange.

With a population of 130 million, an Internet penetration rate of 70%, and one of the largest gaming markets in Latin America, Mexico has a growing data center presence and a strongly growing telecommunications market and digital economy. Strategically located along the submarine cable routes between North and South America, and enjoying terrestrial connectivity to the US, Mexico is well positioned to capitalize on the network density and diversity of its northern neighbor, allowing content, applications, and clouds to be localized to serve the growing needs for low-latency connectivity. Mexico City stands as the traditional data center location for the country, while Santiago de Querétaro is developing into a new data center hub, with extensive investments in the building of new facilities.
