MxD launch Cyber Playbook: For additive manufacturing security

MxD today launched the Cyber Playbook: Ensuring Cybersecurity in Additive Manufacturing, the second playbook in the cyber series. This playbook addresses unique considerations for Department of Defense (DoD) Risk Management Framework (RMF) compliance in the deployment of additive manufacturing devices, commonly referred to as 3D printers. 

The playbook is an essential tool for companies looking to incorporate cybersecurity requirements into their product design and documentation. It is intended to supplement existing federal guidance, summarize relevant cybersecurity frameworks and processes, and clarify interpretation of certain system engineering requirements in the context of 3D printers. 

“As the leading industry targeted, ensuring strong cybersecurity measures in manufacturing is crucial,” said Matt Taylor, Vice President of Projects and Engineering at MxD. “This playbook provides a comprehensive framework for identifying and addressing potential vulnerabilities and is a significant resource for companies who work with the DoD looking to deploy additive manufacturing devices.” 

While additive manufacturing brings advantages to processes that would otherwise require elaborate traditional machining or molding techniques, a mitigation approach for cyber-attacks must take into account the unique requirements for these classes of control systems. Additive manufacturing systems face a variety of cyber threats including control system denial-of-service attacks or damage to the machines; unauthorized disclosure of potentially sensitive, private, or proprietary information; and unauthorized access to other organizational systems.
