How Huawei Is Improving Power Distribution with Smart Solutions

Huawei is addressing critical power distribution challenges, especially with the rise of renewable energy. As energy demand grows and grids face strain, Huawei’s Intelligent Distribution Solution (IDS) is helping optimize power management, prevent asset damage, and improve efficiency. Successful deployments in regions like China’s Shanxi province have enabled real-time fault detection, loss calculation, and improved PV station management.

AI is playing a crucial role in power system operations, from energy forecasting to automated substations. Huawei’s AI-powered solutions enhance grid stability, efficiency, and reliability, ensuring a smarter, more resilient energy future. Discover how Huawei is revolutionizing the power industry.

Hey.

0:05
Hey, Jesse, it's great to meet you.

0:07
I was hoping you could tell our audience about the big challenges facing Power Distribution networks today, particularly with the growth in renewable energy.

0:16
Yeah, Hi, Steve.

0:17
Last year, we shared some forecast data of renewable energy in China, but now the numbers seem to be quite conservative.

0:24
Take China as an example.

0:26
By the end of last year, the total installed capacity of renewable energy in China reached 1450 GW, of which the distributed PV was about 370 GW.

0:36
And the number of EVs in China also reached 31 million, which is incredible.

0:42
And so that  we think the biggest concern in China is definitely the massive access of new loads and also the new generation. And solar power can be too much to be consumed at noon, leading to a heavy reverse overload and asset damage to the distribution transformers.

1:00
I think the same story happened in a lot of countries and regions like Europe and Southeast Asia.

1:05
But at the same time, we think the traditional challenges still haven't gone away.

1:11
In different countries and regions, they are facing different challenges and having different priorities for services, for example, like system losses and power reliability.

1:20
I know that Huawei has launched the intelligent distribution solution to deal with issues like this.

1:26
Is it being used today and can you give me some examples of the benefits it's already delivered?

1:32
Yeah, last year we officially launched the IDS solution.

1:35
And right now, we are continuously refining the solution with our ecosystem partners for a diverse range of scenarios of our customers.

1:43
And we think it is precisely because of this finding technologies for scenarios feature that makes our customers love our solution.

1:51
And at present we have made good progress in more than 10 countries and regions around the world.

1:56
But to be honest, the IDS solution first started from the corporation with State Grid Shaanxi. I’d like to share the latest outcomes and the digital transformation and practices from State Grid Shaanxi.

2:09
Right now ECUs have been deployed in all public transformer districts in Shaanxi province. And also the company has developed more than 33 edge computing apps for the ECU. Today, State Grid Shaanxi can locate faults and notify users within 3 minutes and calculate line loss every 15 minutes.

2:29
State Grid Shaanxi has also implemented group management and control for PV stations and charging piles.

2:36
Besides, we are cooperating with our partners to offer on-demand innovative services such as current leakage management. These innovations coordinate cloud, medium-voltage communication, edge computing, and also low-voltage communication, which is HPLC.

2:52
The combination has effectively addressed nearly all the issues at the low voltage side.

2:57
This is how Shaanxi made it.

2:59
Everyone's talking about AI today.

3:02
Could you share Huawei's perspective on some of the promising applications of AI in the power industry?

3:09
Well, AI4S is being widely applied in core production operations of the power system, especially in areas such as new energy prediction and load prediction,

3:19
For example, in the dispatching system, quickly finding the best solution in a million-dimensional decision space ensures the optimal resolution of multiple tasks, effectively coordinating peak load shifting and the secure running of power grids.

3:32
AI also systematically enhances distribution networks, strengthening transformer district management.

3:37
It also adopted layered and classified intelligence such as Deepseek, which is really popular these days.

3:43
And we think the next-generation transformer districts should support transformer district autonomy and load balance. And also, the AI-based intelligent substation solution realizes least-staffed and even unstaffed O&M of substations, improving safety, efficiency and accuracy.

4:00
Thanks Jesse.

4:00
That was really interesting and it's very exciting to hear about all of these amazing developments in the power industry.

4:07
Thank you for time.

4:08
Enjoy your time in Barcelona.
