Alpheus Communications is going to spend up to $12 million to increase its fiber network footprint in Houston and Dallas, a move that will enable it to better respond to multi-site businesses that are looking for alternative sources to connect their office locations and data centers.
During the initial network expansion phase, Alpheus will add more than 3,000 near-net business locations to its network. In addition, the service provider plans to hire network engineers and other staff to manage the expanded network and customer support.
Over the expanded network, Alpheus can deliver a series of dedicated, synchronous Internet access or network transport up to 1 Gbps for data and voice services. Another element of this expansion is it enhances cloud and data center colocation capabilities, including backup and disaster recovery.
By leveraging and extending its fiber network from its central office as aggregation points and taking advantage of existing network ducts, Alpheus can accelerate the deployment of fiber-based services to its customers.
"Bringing fiber to fast-growing areas means businesses will have the level of bandwidth needed for connectivity and access to services that they otherwise might not be able to find," said Alpheus CEO Scott Widham in a release.
Network expansion has been an ongoing theme at Alpheus. In 2012, the service provider announced a plan to invest more than $10 million to expand its fiber network, which is fulfilling the needs of the growing Houston Energy Corridor and other surrounding markets.
While fiber is Alpheus' favored method to deliver services, the service provider is also making continued progress to expand its Ethernet over Copper (EoC) footprint. By leveraging a mix of copper and fiber, Alpheus expanded its network presence 36 percent to serve 129,000 business locations in southern Texas in 2013.
