Hewlett Packard Enterprises (HPE) has pledged $4 billion over the next four years for the development of edge products and services.
The investment will target research and development of "intelligent" edge services across various technology domains such as security, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and edge computing.
“Data is the new intellectual property, and companies that can distill intelligence from their data —whether in a smart hospital or an autonomous car—will be the ones to lead,” said Antonio Neri, president and chief executive officer, HPE, in a prepared statement. “HPE has been at the forefront of developing technologies and services for the Intelligent Edge, and with this investment, we are accelerating our ability to drive this growing category for the future.”
Service providers, vendors and technology companies have started to move services and applications closer to the edge of networks for faster provisioning to customers. HPE plans on combining its edge products with machine learning and artificial intelligence in order to implement changes in real time.

According to research by Gartner, by 2022, 75% of enterprise-generated data will be created and processed outside of traditional centralized data centers or cloud implementations. Going forward, enterprise applications and services will go to edge-to-cloud architectures, according to Neri.
“Enterprises will require millions of distributed clouds that enable real-time insights and personalized experiences exactly where the action is happening," he said in the press release.
