Google Fiber has appointed John Keib as its inaugural chief technology and product officer (CTPO), where he will assume responsibility for steering product development, engineering initiatives and supply chain operations.
Keib will also oversee projects emerging from GFiber Labs, a program the company launched this year dedicated to innovating internet technology and services.
Having joined Google Fiber in 2019 as VP of product, Keib has played a key role in Google Fiber’s maturing internet speeds, transitioning from a foundational 1-gig to its current multi-gig offerings.
A Google Fiber announcement said that the company was able to successfully introduce 2-gig, 5-gig, and 8-gig products “under [Keib’s] leadership,” forging collaborations with other companies in the internet ecosystem to upgrade both the network and customer hardware.
Those efforts have materialized in services like 20 Gig + Wi-Fi 7, with Google Fiber touting its roadmap toward higher speeds in the future.
Before his role at Google Fiber, Keib held the position of EVP and COO for residential services at Time Warner, where he oversaw a team of 40,000 employees. With nearly two decades of experience at Time Warner, he contributed to various aspects of the business, including sales, marketing, product development, customer service, technical operations and supply chain. Earlier in his career, Keib also held positions at DirecTV and Thompson Media.
Google Fiber CEO Dinni Jain called Keib’s leadership “critical to GFiber’s ability to truly push the boundaries of what ISP can be.”
“With product, engineering, and GFiber Labs under his guidance, we’re very lucky to have him setting both the path for where we’re going and the bar for what we need to be as a company," said Jain in an announcement.
The promotion of Keib comes shortly after Google Fiber appointed Melani Griffith as its chief growth officer. Griffith is also the first to take that position at the company.
In an interview with Fierce Telecom at the time she said that role will be just as much about Google Fiber’s growth as maintaining its existing subscriber base.
