Netgear has completed its acquisition of Placemeter, a specialist in computer vision analytics, bolstering the company’s home security capabilities.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Placemeter’s engineering talent will be integrated into Netgear's Arlo Smart Home Security team, and their proprietary computer vision algorithms will be used to build video analytics products for the Arlo platform.
“Placemeter brings to Netgear commercially-proven, computer vision analytics that will add immense value to the Arlo platform,” said Patrick Lo, chairman and chief executive officer of Netgear, in a release.

Pat Collins, senior vice president of Smart Home Products at Netgear, will oversee Netgear's Arlo Smart Home Security business.
Founded in 2012, Placemeter had developed a series of algorithms that can separate moving objects from the background. The company’s computer vision cascades then classifies those objects as pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles, vehicles and large vehicles.
As a platform that it says can scale, Placemeter can handle an ever-increasing amount of video streams. With the advent of machine learning, the algorithms process video and classify objects in a wide range of new contexts.
The company’s technology had developed solutions to address three applications: smart cities, out-of-home ads and retail.
Cities can use the Placemeter platform to get data about the volume and direction of pedestrians, bikes and vehicles, for example, from the video streams it produces.
