LG kept up the steady drumbeat of product announcements ahead of the official start of the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Spain, taking the wraps off its newest flagship device, the Optimus 4X HD, its first phone with a quad-core processor.

The device, which sports Nvidia's new Tegra 3 1.5 GHz processor, will probably be one of many quad-core devices announced at the trade show. LG appears to be trying to get a jump on being first before the deluge of other products arrives.
The Optimus 4X HD runs version 4.0, or Ice Cream Sandwich, of Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android platform and has a 4.7-inch true HD IPS display, which coupled with the Tegra 3 processor should give users a powerful multimedia experience, LG said. The gadget also sports an 8-megapixel camera and 16 GB of internal storage.
Nvidia also took the opportunity to note that it's officially dubbing its Tegra 3 architecture as a "4-PLUS-1" system and is trademarking the name. The chipset uses up to four cores to handle intensive tasks like displaying HD video while relying on a fifth companion core for less intensive tasks such as checking email and keeping the phone in standby mode, thus saving power. Despite its win with LG, Nvidia is likely to face strong competition for attention and device wins from rivals Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM), Texas Instruments and others at Mobile World Congress.
LG's newest flagship device is part of a slew of announcements the company has made in the run-up to the show. The company also announced the Optimus Vu, a 5-inch device in the "phablet" category to compete with Samsung's Galaxy Note. The company, which is trying to regain momentum in the market, especially in smartphones, will hold a press conference on Feb. 26 to officially show off all its wares.
