According to the GSMA, the organization representing the mobile network industry globally, the ICT sector’s carbon footprint is approximately 700 million tons of CO2 per year, or 1.4% of global emissions, and 4% of global electricity use. While this number might not seem significant when looked at in comparison with other more pollutant sectors, the ICT industry holds the key to understanding energy usage through data analysis and IoT solutions that allow for greater efficiencies across verticals.
Steven Moore, Head of Climate Action, GSMA leads the effort within the GSMA to coordinate the work carried out across different sustainability efforts. Since its conception, the Climate Action Task Force has achieved significant milestones such as promoting and driving commitment from member carriers and suppliers for Net Zero emissions by 2050, driving a unified voice on climate action policy for the sector, and looking at efficiencies in recycling of handsets and network equipment, to mention but a few of the agenda items.
In this podcast interview, we dig into the work thus far carried out and the long road ahead. For the ICT industry to drive energy efficiency up and make use of renewable energy on a global scale, a lot of work is still to be done. But the opportunity to make a global impact is undeniable. Through cellular technology, communities, individuals, industries and governments can make better use of energy and reduce emissions, as well as better keep track and quantify existing emissions.
