The Sprint MVNO TextNow has launched a SIM card enabling customers to use their own phones on its network for as little as $14 a month.
Like some other MVNOs, TextNow uses software that switches between Wi-Fi and cellular networks on the go, enabling it to provide steeply discounted services. The new $5 SIM card is available on the company’s website and comes with a free month of service.
“TextNow is experiencing tremendous popularity and momentum as customers look for more affordable phone plan options,” TextNow CEO Derek Ting said in a prepared statement. “We’re really pleased to extend our wireless offerings to customers who want to bring their existing mobile device to our network, so that they can have an easy and cost effective alternative to traditional carrier plans.”
The startup offers five calling plans starting at $14 a month for 100 MB of 3G or 4G data, unlimited 2G data and unlimited texting and calling to the U.S. and Canada. Its largest plan includes 6 GB of 3G or 4G data, unlimited 2G data and unlimited texting and calling to the U.S. and Canada for $60 a month.
TextNow has more than 8 million active monthly users and said its app has been downloaded more than 60 million times. The company last year launched international calling options to more than 150 countries and also introduced a program enabling users to earn bill credits by watching video ads or choosing special offers from advertising and marketing partners, all within its app.
It monitors Wi-Fi and cellular networks in real time, according to the company, and seamlessly transitions calls between the two when connectivity problems arise. TextNow currently offers six handsets from its website, from the LG Tribute 2 for $15 to a refurbished Samsung Galaxy S6 for $230.
